The leader of the Senate Democrats castigated Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) Monday for McConnell’s statement that Senate Republicans have “yet to feel the urgency of acting immediately” to address the health and economic crises, despite record unemployment numbers and widespread reports of families going hungry and not being able to afford rent.

Although congressional Democrats are busy working on additional stimulus and rescue packages to meet the health and economic fallout from the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Tens of millions of Americans have become unemployed in recent weeks and 83,425 have died as a result of the virus and the state-level efforts to slow its spread.

Although Congress and Donald Trump came together to pass trillions of dollars in legislative assistance, that bipartisanship has certainly cooled more recently.

“The American people need their government to act strongly, boldly and wisely, and this new legislation is just what this crisis demands,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said on the Senate floor.

“Senator McConnell and Senate Republicans ought to heed the lessons of U.S. history and not repeat the mistakes made by President Hoover that helped lead to the Great Depression,” he added.

“Despite Senator McConnell’s recent statement that he feels no urgency to act immediately, tens of millions of American families and workers struggling to put food on the table, afford rent, and provide for their children need help from the federal government and we must deliver it fast,” he added.
