With most states prioritizing their economies over stay-at-home orders, and a federal response which has been largely MIA, the novel coronavirus pandemic will only get worse in the United States, according to one of the top US experts on the matter.
In the United States, nearly 2.7 million Americans have been sickened by the virus and nearly 127,000 have died.
Donald Trump’s White House coronavirus task force just met for the first time in two months and Trump has personally stigmatized mask-wearing and social distancing.
During an appearance before a Senate hearing, Sen Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass) asked the director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Disease, Dr Anthony Fauci to predict the future of the pandemic in the United States.
“I can’t make an accurate prediction but it is going to be disturbing, I guarantee you that, because when you have an outbreak in one part of the country even though in other parts of the country they’re doing well they’re vulnerable,” Dr Fauci said. “I made that point very clearly last week at a press conference. We can’t just focus on those areas that are having the surge. It puts the entire country at risk.
“We are now having forty-plus-thousand new cases a day. I would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 a day if this does not turn around. And so I’m very concerned,” he added.
