Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden defended Michigan Gov Gretchen Whitmer (D), who has been the subject of fierce conservative protests against the state stay-at-home and lockdown orders she’s issued in the face of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
In Michigan, nearly 3,800 people have died of the virus, with more than 41,000 confirmed cases.
Whitmer’s decision to extend her order to May 28 was met with armed protesters chanting, “Lock her up!”
Some protesters gave speeches providing false information, such as that COVID-19 is similar to the common flu.
Whitmer also faced political pressure from Donald Trump and Michigan’s Republican-led state legislature.
With Whitmer under such fire, former vice president Biden came to Whitmer’s aid. Biden has pledged to select a woman as his running mate and Whitmer has been among those mentioned as a possibility.
“The idea of intimidating the governor sitting with rifles that are loaded with ammunition is outrageous,” Biden said. “The president should be speaking out and say it’s totally inappropriate to directly intimidate a governor who is doing one heck of a job. She’s listening to the scientists, she’s listening to docs, she’s listening to the experts. That’s her judgment and it should be sustained and not have.”
