In a rare show of bipartisanship, the Senate’s top Democrat is echoing Donald Trump’s call to shut down operations of the social media provider known as TikTok or transfer control to a US company like Microsoft.

Trump has said that he wants to ban the provider because it’s owned by a Chinese company, and the Chinese government has the power to have that company turn over all data about TikTok users.

But with 100 million users in the United States, TikTok is said to have played an important role during these last months of lockdown and quarantine during the pandemic, offering entertainment, connection and even education.

Reports have begun to surface that Microsoft, the Redmond, Wash.-based tech giant, would acquire TikTok to put it under a US umbrella rather than see it shut down.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) came out Sunday, to support Trump’s position in a highly unusual display of cooperation between Democrats and this president.

“I have been very opposed to TikTok, I was one of the first to expose the Chinese links. And I have urged that TikTok be closed down in America. There’s a new proposal, Mnuchin and Meadows brought it up yesterday, to have Microsoft take it over,” Schumer said, referring to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. “There are some questions that have to be answered. How will the data be stored and secured? Will still the Chinese have links into TikTok? So before I would be for such a merger, I’d have to get some answers to these questions.”
