With several states beginning to reopen despite a continuing COVID-19 pandemic, New York Gov Andrew Cuomo (D) said that he won’t be pressured into reopening his state prematurely.
States, led by Republican governors and allies of Donald Trump’s, have plans to allow residents to open stores and other establishments which have been shuttered due to the spread of the novel coronavirus.
In most cases, health professionals have called these openings premature. However, Trump has been pushing to reopen the US economy for some time, going so far as to stoke protests across the country against state-level stay-at-home orders via Twitter, telling protesters to “liberate” their states.
There have been more than 2.6 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 worldwide. The virus has killed more than 180,000.
In the United States, there have been more than 800,000 reported cases, including 46,379 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The area in and around New York has been the epicenter of the pandemic for weeks.
“I’ve been through a lot of political pressure, and I’m not going to make a bad decision because of political pressure–and I’m getting a lot of the local officials who feel the pressure more than I do, frankly, one way or the other–but I say to them because I talk to them all day long, I say, ‘Look, the truth helps you here. The state law governs, so even if a locality does something that contradicts the state law, the local’s action is void,'” Cuomo said in an on-air interview with his brother, CNN host Chris Cuomo, himself a survivor of COVID-19.
“It’s void, so I say, ‘Tell the truth.’ Which is not up to you and blame me. I don’t have a problem with that, and I’m not going to cave to the political pressure and see people die. I’m not going to do that,” the governor added.
