As the House voted again Tuesday to award would bestow the Congressional Gold Medal to the Capitol Police, local DC police, as well as commend other federal officers who assisted the response to the deadly January 6 insurrection at the Capitol, some 21 Republican lawmakers voted “no.”

The House originally passed a version of the legislation in March which which had separately honored Officer Eugene Goodman of the Capitol Police, who gained public acclaim for his heroism that day protecting lawmakers and their staff during the insurrection — in which violent backers of Donald Trump’s tried to overturn the lawful and legitimate certification of Joe Biden as the next US president in a failed attempt to install Trump for an illegal second term in the White House.

That earlier version met with opposition in the Senate, necessitating a second, more general bill to honor the first responders of that day.

Still, more than 20 House Republicans — largely stalwart Trump supporters — refused to back bestowing the honor Tuesday.

This outraged Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va).

“I think this is a new low for this crowd. They voted to overturn an election, but in their vote today, they kind of sealed the deal of basically affiliating with the mob,” he said of the vote by more than 100 House Republicans to try to decertify Biden’s election just prior to the violent insurrection. “They now are part of the insurrectionist mob. They brought enormous disrepute and dishonor on themselves in not honoring the brave men and women who defended the Capitol of the United States, everybody in it, but also defending the symbol of democracy in the world, not just here in the United States. Shameful moment.”
