Donald Trump’s coming under fire for ignoring guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on how best to reopen the US economy in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

A copy of the C.D.C. guidance obtained by The New York Times includes sections for child care programs, schools and day camps, churches and other “communities of faith,” employers with vulnerable workers, restaurants and bars, and mass transit administrators. The recommendations include using disposable dishes and utensils at restaurants, closing every other row of seats in buses and subways while restricting transit routes among areas experiencing different levels of coronavirus infection, and separating children at school and camps into groups that should not mix throughout the day.

Trump and other administration officials rejected the guidelines for being too restrictive.

“They have hidden the CDC guidelines. But when the University of Washington made these adjustments they said within a month we’re going to see 3,000 deaths per day, 200,000 new infections each day. That’s a 9/11 every single day,” said former vice president Al Gore. “And ignoring that thinking that somehow that’s magically not going to happen, this is botched reopening. And it is not even going to serve the purposes that the president wants it to serve, to help the economy because people are not going to be going out the way he would like them to if they’re afraid because the doctors tell them it’s not safe.”

New York state will follow a program to re-open its economy which is based on facts and science, according to Gov Andrew Cuomo (D).

“We have a very specific plan, probably the most specific plan, and the governing philosophy is — I understand the anxiety and the stress and we all want the open as quickly as possible, everybody does, myself included, but you don’t operate out of emotion and passion, right?” he asked. “You stay with facts and data. So we have been doing that all along. We follow the science, we follow the facts, we follow the data, and we’re going to reopen by the data.”
