MSNBC Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough, who originally tagged Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as “MoscowMitch” over the Kentucky Republican’s reluctance to defend US elections against further Russian interference, was back at taunting McConnell for his impending move to block police reform which would ban the sort of chokeholds which killed George Floyd in police custody.
The Democratic-led House has already approved the reform bill–including the chokehold ban–in response to the national outcry against the murder of the African American Floyd by a white Minneapolis police officer who kept his knee against Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes.
McConnell, like most other legislation which has come over from the Democratic House, plans to bottle up the police reform legislation.
“Mitch, guess what, I can’t speak Russian so get an interpreter to tell this to you if you will. Mitch, in America, we have elections every two years, and you have an election coming up right now and you’ve got some problems because the kids are all calling you ‘Moscow Mitch,'” Scarborough said. “You’re going to be ‘Chokehold Mitch’ next. The kids are probably going to start calling you that. Because again, you don’t have a 10-vote majority, you can’t hide behind the fact ‘There are all these Republicans and I can’t control them.’ Mitt Romney will ban chokeholds, Lisa Murkowski will vote to ban chokeholds. I think Susan Collins even, with the race she’s in right now, will probably vote. She will be very worried and very troubled and then, yes, she’ll also vote to ban chokeholds.
“But you’re going to be asked about it on the campaign trail. And the race is going to be a lot tougher than you think it is, Mitch. Really is,” added Scarborough, also a former Republican congressman from Florida.
